While now working at the University of Tromsø International Office I still keep my company Diehtu on the side. For development of easy to use WordPress based websites. Low-cost, non-profit pricing and full control for the customer.

I could do consultancy on larger projects, but mainly with regards to recommending and finding others that can take on the project itself.

Diehtu mainly works with local Norwegian customers so the site has no English page. Write me if you think you might want my services.

New life situation makes for new needs :-) I’m for hire as webdeveloper again, mostly through the company of an old colleague called Retina A/S. What would you hire me for?

Well mostly the whole internet presence I can handle, easily and with flexibility suited to your or your companys need. Nice discounts or no-cost for friends. Here’s some of what:

Web and e-mail hosting (for extremely low or no cost since the solutions I use are either hosted on my own server or with Google for free)

Domain registration and management.

Website planning, evaluation and development

Installation of Content Management System to provide for easy website management by one or thousands of users (Mostly using the fabulous open source tool called WordPress)

Mailinglist management

Training and courses to ensure you or your users know how to manage the system.

Search Engine Optimizatio – making sure that your website shows up on Google for what you define as your most important key-words.

Advisory on current website and services – giving or seeking answers to any question one may have about the cyberspace.

Easy to manage remote backups for small business/single users.
Ie. a nice way to ensure that you don’t loose your documents and pictures by storing a copy on a server somewhere else in the world.

As I plan to do webdevelopment as a part-time job I/we are looking for time limited development projects. That is projects where I can do intensive and time-consuming development over the winter months and minimal follow-up from May to November.

Get in touch if you have questions.

The past couple of months I’ve been harassing my friends and former colleagues with something that could be deemed spam by some. For this I apologise. Even if rushed it was with good intentions.

I first got an invite to LinkedIn by my former master thesis supervisor. Usually sceptic to such online networking «schemes» I was this time caught by the flow, maybe because I was unemployed and with too much spare time. Too much spare time to «collect coke caps» as a friend formulated it.

I still hold that it might have a function, and that the way it is done with LinkedIn might prove useful to me. Also the fact that I rapidly found a couple of former colleagues already registered in the system weighed in. That is when I decided to e-mail close to one hundred of my contacts in one go.

So what is LinkedIn? It’s a tool to maintain a database of your professional network. This can be in order to keep in touch with past colleagues and to find jobs or contacts through your network. I found some other reasons to read about too. There are some hints on usage in that link, but I’ll summarize my own thoughts too.

Avoid creating two accounts.
The system works badly if you have some contact relations on one account and some on another. Plus there is little likelihood that you’ll keep both «profiles» updated. The way to avoid creation of duplicate accounts is to make sure you add all past (even if you do/can’t use them anymore) and current e-mail addresses. This also means that if someone you know uploads their address book with an other address than your main one, they will still see that you’re available on LinkedIn.
If you have created a second account you have to write LinkedIn support in order to delete it.

Upload your address book(s).
This way you can quickly see which of your friends are already registered. It is a lot easier asking those who already are to link up. Plus it is much easier than entering all the e-mails and names yourself. The other side of this is that if some of those addresses uploaded should sign-up to LinkedIn at a later stage (before you’ve added them) you’ll know through your LinkedIn homepage.
You can import from most e-mail programs and webmails – instructions provided by LinkedIn.

Write personal invites.
If you really do wish for people to accept your invitations you should write personal text in the invite messages. At least for those contacts that haven’t already registered with LinkedIn. Explaining briefly what LinkedIn is and why you think they should sign up, is a good idea.

Hard to keep in touch when your work e-mail changes, or you change internet provider at home (and thus the address changes) and you’re not too happy with the advertising that goes with some of the free e-mail services?Getting your own domain (like langvass.org or dagbladet.com) is easy and cheap. To setup e-mail addresses using Gmail this is almost easier. And people don’t even have to notice that you are using Gmail.

Why Gmail?
The fact that Gmail has an impressive spam filter, is easy to use, has good e-mail search, can be used with regular POP e-mail programs (such as Outlook) and gives you a lot of space (2,7 GB at the moment and it is increasing) makes this a better solution than anything you can pay for.

Like even if you have a webmail and e-mail system at work you might want to setup a Gmail account for it and forward the e-mail to Gmail.

Because you can never be sure that Google will keep the setup as nice as it is today, you might want to make yourself independent by buying your very own domain. (And you might already not be to happy with how Google yielded to Chinese government demands on censoring the Chinese version of Google.) That means if you turn away from Google in the future your friends can still keep writing you at the address you setup.

So, as I’ve done this for a couple of friends I thought I’d try to explain how to you all. If you have questions just ask.

The first step would be to get yourself a Gmail account if you haven’t got one already. Head over to www.gmail.com and use your mobile number to get an account or ask me for an invitation and you won’t have to give away your number. If you don’t want to use Gmail… ask and I’ll see if I write something about that too.

Step two is to register the domain and setup the forwarding of addresses. The best place I’ve found to register domains so far is a www.domaindiscover.com , they charge $10 per year for .org and .com domains. The good thing is they allow you to create as many e-mail forwarders as you want, meaning that if others in your family want to have an address that is no problem.

So on their webpage you type in the desired domain name in the domain registration box. Note that someone else might have taken the domain which is easiest, then you could try with other top level domains.

If you have troubles checkout their FAQ or ask me.

Step three is to configure your domain with e-mail forwarding to go to your gmail account or any other address you prefer. This you can do once you’re logged into Domaindiscover after you have bought the domain. Click on e-mail service and add “e-mail forward”.

Step four is to add the new domain you registered to Gmail so that you are allowed to send as that address. This is not strictly necessary but will make your friends less confused, since you will appear to be sending from the same address you ask them to write to. Gmail describes how you do this in their FAQ.

You might want to set your new address as the default sending address, if not you will still be confusing your friends.

If you need some help just ask and I’ll help out, it is pretty easy but I can see that this becomes too techy for some. Takes me 10 minutes to do this so no problem to do it for you.
